I discovered this simple syrup when I moved to Italy and tasted lemonade that was deliciously sweet, but also had some added flavor I couldn’t quite pinpoint. What was it? Basil! Since then I’ve discovered that it takes less than 10 minutes to make, and is a fun gift if you put it in a Mason jar, add a label, and tie on a pretty ribbon like I did above. (I need someone to teach me how to tie ribbons better!)
If you’re reluctant to try it because you just can’t imagine drinking basil juice, I urge you to give a shot once to see why Italians love it so much!!
There are only a few ingredients: sugar, water, and basil.
Basically you just boil the basil in sugar and water.
Then you remove the basil leaves, strain it, and let it cool. That’s pretty much it! You can add it to lemonade or cocktails.
